This saucy celebration was first declared in 1977 by Buffalo, New York’s then-Mayor Stan Makowski, in honor of the city’s claim to fame of inventing the buffalo wing. According to the Smithsonian Magazine, the now famous dish was born at the Anchor Bar in 1964.
